3 (Free) Ways to Enjoy the Local Wildlife in Jupiter, Florida

From loggerhead turtles and friendly manatees to red foxes and even Florida panthers, there are plenty of animals to be seen in the marshes, mangroves, waters and forests of Jupiter. Want to know the best viewing locations? Check out these 3 spots (an added bonus — they’re all FREE):

1. Scope out the Sanctuary. If you want to get up close and personal with some of Florida’s most amazing wildlife, head on over to Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. Originally founded in 1983 as a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center, the Sanctuary has added many educational programs and tours over the years. Admission to the nature trails is free for both children and adults – along the winding boardwalks, you’re likely to spot a wide variety of animals, including bobcats, black bears, foxes, alligators and even otters! The Sanctuary also hosts many different special educational events covering the wonders of Florida’s natural wildlife. Tip: Check the website for special programs and feeding times before you go.

Location: 2500 Jupiter Park Drive
Hours: Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

2. Grab your fins. Ready to come face-to-face with rays and colorful fish? Grab your snorkel and fins, and dive right in! Jupiter has several great snorkeling spots where you can spy many species of marine life. Our favorite locales include Carlin Park (the rock reef at the north end of the park), DuBois Park (the lagoon area is a great kid-friendly spot) and Coral Cove Park, home to an artificial reef that attracts many different types of fish (including manatees and the occasional shark). Tips: Be sure to listen to lifeguard instructions – and bring an underwater camera!

Carlin Park: 400 South A1A
DuBois Park: 19075 Dubois Rd.
Coral Cove Park: 1600 Beach Rd.

3.Hit the river. Canoeing the Loxahatchee River is a must, of course – but if you haven’t yet visited the River Center, you’re in for a treat! The center is chock-full of interactive exhibits that detail the river watershed and all the animals that call it home. Adults and kids can peek at some of the some of the area’s amazing aquatic creatures in the center’s nine different fresh and saltwater aquariums. A “touch tank” even offers an opportunity to feel and handle some of the local wildlife. Tip: Don’t miss the live feedings on Saturday afternoons!

Location: 805 N. US 1
Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
